Probably the most immediate meaning of the pine cone is that of the association with ‘0’, the cosmic egg, the birth, the beginning, the centre of the world. Its peculiar egg shape takes one directly to fertility (not only physically but spiritually) and the abundance whereby it extracts nutriment because it is full of seeds. A symbol perhaps that more than others describes and makes one think of female energy, of re-birth and therefore eternity and immortality.
In western alchemy the pine cone represents various stages of initiation. When this is complete the pine cone is shown open and with gaping wings, symbolizing the intellectual reason and that of the soul that takes flight.
"Every seed that Autumn throws into the deepness of the Earth has its own way of separating from the nucleus and casing in order to finally form leaves, flowers and fruit. But what are those ways, the purpose of every seed’s peregrinations is identical: to get to lift itself up face upwards towards the sun."
Seeds describe the past that leads to the future. They are expression of life potentiality and, quite dramatically, its tracked path. As it is with our children: they are made of their own material. We can give them good nurishment and nurture and water and sense of direction... but in the end I believe their inner nature will forge their lifes.
It has always fascinated me the unexpressed power of the seed from which the trunk, wood, leaves, branches, and in turn itself again are formed. In my atelier I elaborate on two ‘Studies of Pine Cones’ in large dimensions, one on a white background and one on a black background. A dualism that takes me to the thought of Plato’s Reason on the winged chariot that is pulled by two horses. One white that must be spurred to be brought to the world of Ideas, whilst dominating the black horse who would like to plummet towards the earthly universe.
I paint acorns as I love oaks and their meaning in the Celtic religion; I paint pomegranate for their significance of unity among the Jewis people and their inner beauty and colors; I paint nuts for they symbolize body, soul and spirit, and so on.
If the tree represents the human being, I can imagine the forest as a big mother. And the pinecone is soforth her Grandmother. The very beginning, and the result of everything in this karma wheel of life where everything is hidden in everything, where unity lays in diversity, where time doesn't seem to have a progressive line but a cyclic unesorable returnign path.
"You will find more lessons in the woods than in books. Trees and stones will teach you what you cannot learn from masters." ( S. Bernard)
